Cruelly, the last song the great Louis Armstrong recorded before he died was ‘We have all the time in the world’. Cork City FC is alive and kicking, despite the John Grisham courtroom drama that’s unfolded this week, but they’re certainly not singing from the rooftops.  

It seems like a normal matchday here at Turner’s Cross; volunteers are sweeping a sodden pitch, fans are funnelling through the turnstiles while the press box is filling up as normal.  This game however is very much the full stop in a week that started with a creditable 1-1 draw in Derry on Sunday before the story shifted to the Four Courts on Monday.

Despite winding up orders and failed compromises with the Revenue, the match tonight will go ahead. Who will take to the field in City colours however is another matter. A trivial one in the life-or-death circumstances, perhaps. 

The Seagulls will field a relatively settled side as usual, but the hosts have midfield talisman Joe Gamble rated as a major doubt. We’re still waiting on the team sheet here but one thing is certain, Colin Healy, Denis Behan and Pat Sullivan will not line out. The trio have exited Leeside in a bid to raise funds to square the tax bill and to lighten a creaking wage bill.   

However, it's progress, at least, that we're dealing in points tonight rather than pounds. As Satchmo sang 'What a wonderful world'; League of Ireland fans are the only judge and jury at Turner's Cross this evening.
